這個獎盃名一語三關，Win One for the Gipper是俚語，意指追求成功或勝利以紀念某人（To pursue success or victory in honor of someone else.)。典故出自Notre Dame大學美式足球運動員George Gipp（"the Gipper"）。當時執教Notre Dame隊的教練Knute Rockne呼籲隊員為紀念已經逝世幾年的George Gipp而"Win One for the Gipper"。
同時Gipper也是美國總統里根的綽號。里根從政前，作爲演員的第一個重要角色是在1940年的經典電影《Knute Rockne, All American》中飾演不幸的美式足球明星George Gipp。片中的名場景之一，奄奄一息，臥床不起的Gipp對他的教練說希望隊友能為他贏得一場關鍵的足球比賽。扮演Gipper的里根在影片中說：“win just one for the Gipper.”這個角色使里根聲名鵲起，從此Gipper成了里根的綽號。
